"The Unborn Future of America- Georgia's Controversial 6 wk. Abortion Ban".
On October 24th, the Georgia Supreme Court issued a ruling to uphold their 6-week abortion ban, sparking significant controversy and public discussion. This decision aligns Georgia with the 20 other U.S. states that now have some form of restriction or ban on abortion (CNN).
To understand the implications of this court ruling, it's important to look at the legal history of abortion laws in the U.S. In 1973, the landmark case of Roe v. Wade was passed by the Supreme Court, legalizing abortion across the whole United States. The court's decision was based on the interpretation of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which guarantees equal rights to all citizens. However, in 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, deciding that the Constitution never protected the right to abortion (Guardian). This all led to the Georgia Supreme Court's recent ruling which said that the Constitution never explicitly legalized abortion and it was being wrongly interpreted. Now nearly half of the United States has some form of abortion restriction in place, which has protected more innocent, unborn lives. Research from the Society of Family Planning, as reported by The Guardian, indicates that “in the year after Roe fell, there were almost 20,000 fewer abortions performed in the state than there would have been if Roe had survived.”
However, the issue of abortion is complicated because many women choose abortion due to their inability to safely or financially raise a child. While our government needs to protect the rights and well-being of mothers, it's also vital to protect the lives of the unborn. As a Christian, I believe that life begins at conception, and abortion is taking an innocent life that cannot even defend itself. It's undeniable that rape and incest are tragic realities in today's world, but I believe that once a life is conceived, the mother carries a responsibility to protect it. Instead of legalizing abortion which deeply hurts both the mother and child, we should instead focus on providing financial, physical, and spiritual support to those who find themselves unprepared for motherhood. By offering assistance to women in raising a child, we can avoid the tragic choice of abortion and ensure that both mothers and their children have a chance to enjoy a safe and happy life.
