"A Guide to the Top 3 Things to Experience Autumn in Upstate New York"

Autumn is a season of change as many people transition from their summer break back into their responsibilities of work and school. As someone who has lived in upstate New York my entire life, I think that fall is one of the most beautiful seasons here and there are so many things to look forward to. As the days get shorter and the air gets colder, it can be easy to complain about missing summer. Fall is a special time of year though, so here is a list of some festive things to get excited about and look forward to the arrival of a new season!

1. Colorful Foliage and the Great Outdoors

One of the top things to look forward to is the beautiful foliage and fall colors as the trees start dropping their leaves all over upstate New York. According to Travel Leisure, New York is ranked 5 times out of the 21 most beautiful places to see fall foliage in the United States. Fall is a time for some of the best hiking weather, so take some time to get outdoors and visit some of our state parks. Enjoy the feeling of the crisp air, listen to the gentle sound of leaves falling, and take in the vibrant hues of red, orange, and gold of all the trees. For some of the most beautiful views of the changing season, take a weekend away to climb some mountains and explore the quaint villages in the Adirondacks. Letchworth State Park is another beautiful place to hike with a breathtaking view of a waterfall and river valley. Spending some time admiring God’s beautiful creation is a great way to get excited about the fall.

2. Seasonal Food and Drink

Another thing to look forward to this fall is all of the delicious seasonal food and drinks. There is something so comforting about the warm and cozy flavors of fall foods. During this season, you should try everything from crisp apples picked fresh from the tree, warm pumpkin spice lattes, comforting bowls of soup, homemade pies, freshly pressed apple cider, and fried donuts. There are many farms, bakeries, and small businesses all around upstate New York that offer seasonal delicacies made with freshly harvested ingredients. One of my personal favorites is Kelly’s Apple Farm in Hilton, where they serve the best homemade donuts, bakery goods, and apple cider; all of which they make right in front of you!

3. Outdoor Harvest Festivities

Another exciting thing to look forward to is all of the fun outdoor harvest festivities. All around upstate New York, you can find everything from pumpkin patches, corn mazes, scarecrow contests, haunted hayrides, harvest festivals, farmer’s markets, etc. Set aside some time to go outside and visit one of these places with your friends and family to truly celebrate Autumn. These farms are often run by families, and they are full of fun games, delicious seasonal food, and pumpkins! Stokoe Farms in Scottsville has a huge corn maze to get lost in, hayrides, live entertainment, food stalls, a petting zoo, a bounce pillow, and a huge pumpkin patch. Whether picking out the perfect pumpkin to carve or being deliciously scared on a dark haunted hayride, take the time to go out with the people you love and celebrate Autumn.
